Fun Halloween Food

I've been making some fun Halloween food but haven't been able to take the time and gather all my photos together! I wanted to share two fun Halloween food we have made in the past. The Crescent mummies are super easy to make! The Spider Web Chocolate Cups are a little more intense and take some preparation. I am hoping to share some more fun food later this week!


Crescent Mummies

Wrap hot dogs in crescent rolls and cook for around 12 minutes. Dot eyes with mustard.

 

Spider Web Chocolate Cups

(Best Recipes by Publications International)

Ingredients:

  • 6 muffin cups
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups cold milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen OJ concentrate, thawed
  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • 1 package (4-serving size) vanilla instant pudding and pie filling mix
  • Black decorating gel (tube)

Directions:

1. Melt chocolate chips and combine with shortening in saucepan.

2. Spoon melted chocolate into 6 muffin cups. Coat each muffin cup completely. You will want these a little thick. Freeze for 30 minutes or until firm. Peel off muffin cups and return back to freezer.

3. Combine milk and OJ concentrate. Whisk in red and yellow food coloring until you reach the desired orange color. Pour into chocolate cups and refrigerate for 1 hour.

4. Pipe decorating gel in spiral shape on top of each cup. With a toothpick, draw straight lines from the center spiral to the outer spiral. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Boo!

A few years ago, we did "You've Been BOOed." Logan had a lot of fun putting together the candy bags, quietly walking up to the door to leave the candy bag, and run excitedly away. Of course we did it during the day so I knew that most people were not home! It's a tradition that I think would be a lot of fun to start again.

How To Make Your Own Halloween Cups

Making your own Halloween cups is very easy and took me under 5 minutes to do. I was going to make them on clear plastic cups but discovered I didn't have any. I then turned to my dinner cups and was excited with the outcome! You can create these Halloween cups either for a quick party or for longer term use!

 


Materials:

  • glass or plastic cups
  • black vinyl
  • vinyl cutting machine such as the Silhouette or Cricut

 

To Make:

1. Find desired image. I used the online Silhouette store and picked a pumpkin face and haunted house.

2. Cut out images on your machine.

3. Tear backing off the vinyl.

4. Adhere to cup, smoothing out the bubbles.

5. If you want to reuse the glasses, hand wash after each use.

You are finished! One of the easiest and quickest projects I have ever done!

Frightful Friday

It is October and that means Frightful Friday is back in full force! Each week, I plan a fun evening of spooky dinner, yummy desert, and a fun Halloween activity. Just tonight, my son told me how much fun he has on these evenings. It makes all the stress and fatigue worth it!


...All recipes this evening came from the pil best recipes Halloween magazines I find on the check out stand at the grocery stores each Halloween...


This Frightful Friday we celebrated with...

Bugs

Ingredients:

  • can of crescent rolls
  • bag of cocktail franks
  • thin pretzel sticks. 

To Make:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

2. Open crescent rolls and take each triangle and cut into three triangles. This took some thinking. Sorry I don't have a picture, my husband and I were thinking too hard! Really, you can't go wrong as long as you have some dough to wrap abound the frank.

3. Wrap each triangle around one cocktail frank, leave some frank showing in front.

4. Bake 11 to 15 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown.

5. Cool for a few minutes.

6. Take three pretzel sticks and break each one in half.

7. Press pretzel sticks into crescent roll, three on each side for the legs.

8. Serve with condiment of your choice.


Magic Potion

*I'll post on Wednesday how to make the glasses.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 package of lime-flavored gelatin
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 3/4 liter of lemon-lime soda, chilled
  • 1/4 cup sugar

To make:

1. In a punch bowl, pour boiling water over gelatin. Stir until the gelatin is dissolved.

2. Stir in cold water.

3. Add sugar and soda. Stir well.

4. Keep chilled until ready to serve.

 

 

Ghost Cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • cupcakes
  • Cool Whip
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Prepared chocolate frosting (I broke down and bought it from the store.)
  • Pastry bag or ziplock back

To Make:

1. Make your favorite recipe of chocolate cupcakes and cool.

2. Heat a cup of prepared chocolate frosting by microwaving on high for 10 second increments. Stir after each increment until frosting is melted.

3. Hold each cupcake upside down and dip into chocolate frosting. Tilt the cupcake to let the extra frosting drip off. Let frosting sit until firm.

4. Snip off the tip of a pastry bag or a corner of a ziplock bag. Fill bag with Cool Whip and pipe in a circular motion onto the top of the cupcake, coming to a point.

5. Place two mini chocolate chips onto the Cool Whip as eyes.

6. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

*Note #1: Last year I tried regular whipped topping but it did not work well. I find the Cool Whip kept it's shape and was a lot easier to work with!

*Note #2: With the frosting, these cupcakes turned out super rich.



For our activity, we played Fall Bingo. At the website, DLTK, you can create a variety of Bingo themed cards. I was able to print five different copies of our Bingo card as well as the cards that you will call out. You can pick either words or pictures. The website is great!

Frightful Friday: Theme Night

October has come! The decorations are up and Frightful Friday has made it's return. If you are new to our theme nights, I plan a fun dinner, desert, and activity to celebrate the season.

For our first Frightful Friday, I kept dinner a little low key, but yet highly delicious.

I made a quick and simple...

Beef Stew.

(serves 6-8)

It's super easy and super yummy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs of meat (turkey definitely works, but after review, we prefer good old meat.)
  • 1 frozen package of mixed vegetables
  • 4 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 32 ounces or more of a tomato-vegetable juice cocktail- V8 works great
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • salt and pepper

To make:

1. In a large pot, brown meat.

2. Add onion and cook a couple minutes.

3. Add tomato-vegetable juice, mixed vegetables, potatoes, and salt and pepper.

4. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 30-45 minutes until your potatoes are cooked.

5. Dish out and enjoy!

You can also make this in your slower cooker... However, I used my slow cooker to make...

Apple Cider!

(serves 4)

The house smelled soooo good and was quite tasty. My husband is not the biggest fan of apple cider and he loved this recipe!

Ingredients:

  • Bottle of apple cider
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar

To make:

1. Pour all ingredients into a slower cooker.

2. Heat for 6 hours.

3. Enjoy the incredible smell of your home!

4. Take out the cinnamon stick and serve.

For our activity, we played...

"Pin the face on the Pumpkin."

The kids loved it!

To make the pumpkin face, you will need:

  • black, green, and orange construction paper
  • tape
  • clear contact paper
  • scissors
  • pencil

To make:

1. Tape 4 pieces of orange construction paper into a square.

2. Draw a large pumpkin and cut

3. Draw a stem from the green construction paper and cut

4. Draw 3 different sets of eyes, mouths, and noses from the black construction paper.

5. Cut two, identical pieces of clear contact paper that is larger than the pumpkin.

6. Peel off the covering of one piece of clear contact paper, place pumpkin on top and press firmly.

7. Take the second piece of clear contact paper, peel off covering, and place on top of the pumpkin. Press firmly and smooth out any bubbles.

8. Cut out pumpkin closely to the sides of the pumpkin... you are basically laminating.

9. Redo steps #5-8 to cover the eyes, nose, mouth, and stem.

10. Attach stem to the pumpkin with tape.

11. Place tap on the back of each mouth, nose, and eye.

12. For younger kids, let them take the different pieces of the face and create a crazy face.For older children, blindfold and see what hilarious face they put together.

After much laughter and fun, we decorated our

Sugar Cookies

(Earlier, the kids helped me make the cookies. When cooking with kids, please remember there is often a mess to clean up, but well worth it!)
